An author from Bromham has published a book aimed at encouraging children to read.
Sarah Mackie has written Out of Time, an action-packed, fantasy adventure aimed at readers aged nine plus and specifically structured to appeal to reluctant readers who prefer their consoles.
Debut author Sarah, 50, said: “If we want to encourage young people to read, we need books that create a similar level of excitement as their computer games.”
An award-winning marketer she said: “I get to meet a lot of young people who only read for school rather than for pleasure. The answer is all too often, I’d rather be on my computer. We all understand the importance of good literacy in adults and so I decided to study computer game structures and publishing in order to write a story that combines the best of both worlds.”
The 370-page book covers the themes of climate change and the environment, time travel, diabetes, being responsible and teamwork. It follows 12-year-old Sam Bentley, who is terrified of joining a new school, and has travelled in time from a future that has been devastated by the Great Surge, a weather event so vast that it wiped out 80 percent of the world’s population in just 24 hours.
Separated from his parents and younger sister Daisy, who lies dying in a diabetic coma, Sam must convince his great grandfather, Edgar Davenport, to help him build a time machine so that he can return home with vital medicine to cure his sister. Sam must cope with missing his family, while learning to fit in to a very different sort of world, without revealing his secret or disrupting the timeline.
Sarah, who lives with husband Graham and three labradoodles, she has been marketing in the environmental sector, which has given the inspiration for The Sam Bentley Adventures.
Sarah is also a PetsAsTherapy volunteer and along with one her dogs, Milo, she regularly visita a couple of local schools who take part in the Read2Dogs scheme.
Out Of Time is available in paperback and ebook, priced £6.99.
