Bedford’s growing art scene has a new studio offering a workspace and a gallery.

Animal Studios Ltd has been set up by illustrator David Litchfield and creative consultant Kayte Judge, with a little help from their friends.

David said the pair have been working on opening Animal, in Castle Lane, for the past year.

He said: “It’s the same spot as where I held my first solo exhibition in August 2011. The exhibition lasted a week and it was the greatest week ever.

“Ever since then, it’s laid empty and I’ve been hoping to do something in this space.”

He added: “Castle Lane is a good area for a studio. There’s a lot of creative people in Bedford, you never know who is going to pop in.”

The building is divided into two, with the right hand side being used as a communal studio where people working in creative industries can share ideas.

David said: “It’s a vibrant space. There are seven desks, with just two spare, which will be rented out in the future.”

The left side of the building houses the gallery for regular exhibitions and also can be used as a meeting and workshop room, and a place to show films and host pop-up events.

The gallery opens this Saturday, September 6, with an exhibition by Bedford artist Alison Goodyear, entitled Wild Things.
