Emergency services called to ‘an incident’ at Bromham Bridge on Monday (August 1) were tracking down an absconded prisoner, police have confirmed.
Speculation on social media had been rife after emergency vehicles were spotted at the location on Monday – with some suggesting police were searching for a missing person while others speculated someone may have entered the water and got into difficulties.
Eyewitness reports said there were three police cars, a van and police dog in the area.

Bedford Today contacted police on Monday – and today (Thursday, August 4) they have confirmed that they were called by colleagues in Immigration Enforcement to a report of an absconded prisoner.
Police received the call shortly after 10am on Monday.
A spokesman said: “Following a brief search, a man was detained a short time later and was returned to the custody of immigration services for onward transportation.”
