A whopping donation for cerebral palsy charity thanks to pub-goers in Westoning and Shillington

The cash has been raised by customers at two pubs, in Westoning and Shillington.

The wonderful donation has been made to Bedford and District Cerebral Palsy Society (BDCPS) who were nominated and chosen as the new ‘Charity of the Year’ by The Chequers in Westoning, in October last year.

The idea began in 2013 when Victoria and Philip Kelly, the pub owners, asked the community to put forward the charity which they wished the pub to support at the fundraising events during the year.

Each year they align themselves with “small, local charities who do not benefit from government funding in the way in which many large organisations do”.

The year kicked off with the famous ‘Burger Extravaganza’ and was followed by events including quizzes, a marathon and ‘Cheqfest’.

Their newly opened pub The Crown in Shillington later held events which also added to the final total - a phenomenal £14,658, greatly exceeding their annual target of £10,000.

A cheque presentation was held at the BDCPS ‘Little Sweet Peas’ Christmas party on December 4, just one of the vital services that BDCPS provide.

BDCPS is a small, local charity which provides specialist support for people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities, many of which are life-limiting.

It provides play schemes, youth clubs and adventures for young people with disabilities and in addition critical support and funding to their families and carers.

It recognises the far reaching effects of disability on the whole family and aims to help them lead a ‘normal’ life.

Ellie Mangold, activities manager at BDCPS, said: “I feel truly humbled how the community has come together and given us so much of their support.

“Throughout the year at the different events, BDCPS feel very much part of their extended family and are privileged to have met so many generous people. We are truly grateful for this support.
