A fire which engulfed a 100-tonne haystack is thought to have been started deliberately.
Firefighters from Kempston Community Fire Station were called to battle the blaze in Bedford Road, Wootton, at 11.23pm (Sunday, April 17).
When they arrived nine minutes later they found 30 per cent of it was on fire.
The crew created a fire break to stop it spreading and used stack drags, the farmer’s forklift, and one covering water jet to successfully protect a nearby horse barn.
The fire itself was left to burn out and firefighters left the scene at 2.34am this morning (18 April).
A Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Firefighters returned this morning to check that there was no further risk and a further re-inspection will be carried out this afternoon. It is thought the fire was started deliberately.”
