Strangers create a beautiful place in innovative new play

A thought-provoking story of three strangers who are killed an hour after catching the same train comes to Bedford next week.

Locus Amoenus takes its title from a Latin term meaning ‘pleasant place’, characterised in literature and visual arts throughout history as a sunlit glade or meadow.

Performed mostly in English, the dialogue and action interacts with projected text that acts both as a narrator and as a guide to the inner lives of the characters, revealing their future hopes and past disappointments.

A spokeswoman for theatre company Atresbandes said: “Through a series of conversations and situations, efforts to understand and be understood, Locus Amoenus describes our struggle to reach our own version of ultimate paradise, an idyllic place where everyday problems disappear.

“This struggle is a journey, and we often forget to look at the landscape along the way.

Locus Amoenus was created by the company in a series of residencies in Birmingham.

Atresbandes is a Catalan company based in Barcelona with a number of international collaborations and awards to their credit. They have been described by Total Theatre as “a trio of terrifyingly gifted performers”.

The production will be staged at The Place in Bradford Road on Tuesday January 26 at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £10 for adults and £8.50 for concessions. Call or visit 01234 354321 www.theplacebedford.org.uk to book.
