Renowned duo bring festival to a close with classic songs

British diva Jacqui Dankworth, American vocalist/pianist Charlie Wood and their band will perform their Just You, Just Me project at the Corn Exchange. The support act is the London Vocal Project, led by musical director Pete Churchill.

Jacqui Dankworth is one of the most highly regarded vocalists in the UK. Her concert appearances and her stylistically diverse recordings showcase her virtuosic mastery of a wide spectrum of genres. Known primarily as a jazz singer, Jacqui’s unique musical palette also draws on folk, soul, classical, blues, and numerous other influences. She has been described by the Sunday Times as “one of our finest singers, regardless of category.”

Charlie Wood is a singer/songwriter and keyboardist whose eclectic musical style incorporates elements of jazz, blues, traditional r’n’b and popular music.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1967, Charlie spent many years there performing nightly with his Hammond organ trio in a long-standing residency at King’s Palace on Beale Street.

The gig became known to touring musicians and locals alike, attracting impromptu sit-ins from BB King, Georgie Fame, Joey DeFrancesco, George Coleman, Mulgrew Miller, Alvin Batiste and many others. In October 2014, Wood became the 136th recipient of a Brass Note on Beale Street, the Memphis equivalent of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Jacqui Dankworth and Charlie Wood’s ‘Just You, Just Me’ duets project celebrates some of the great musical partnerships of the 20th century. It features classic compositions and landmark recordings by legendary duos like Ray Charles & Betty Carter, Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn, George & Ira Gershwin, Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway, James Taylor 
& Carole King, and many more.

The London Vocal Project are one of the UK’s leading contemporary vocal ensembles. Formed in 2008 from graduates of London conservatoires, the 24-strong choir comprises singers, instrumentalists, composers and music educators.
