New eat-in and takeaway deli opens at site of infamous old Bedford chippy
It's on Newnham Street in the town
A new gastro deli has opened in the former Fred’s Chippy in Newnham Street.
Popular with anyone checking out what was going under the hammer at Peacock's back in the day, the former chippy has now been transformed into an open kitchen and deli counter called Cibo Deli & Kitchen.
Created and run by the Bosco family, which began AB Fruits in the town in 1982, the new store will stock speciality ingredients: fresh pastas, sauces, eggs, meats and hand-picked Italian wines.
Working with Bedford’s own mozzarella makers Valerio’s, the store will sell special hand-made cheeses, returning to traditional methods of producing mozzarella.
Cibo will also run special evening foodie events and collaborations with guest chefs, friends and producers.
Legendary French chef Pierre Koffman opened the doors on Tuesday (June 1).
Co-owner Roberto said: "Cibo is Italian for food and nourishment. We aim to create a warm, friendly atmosphere where customers can browse the food shelves and deli counter, or sit-in and enjoy our freshly prepared foods."
