Providing a high standard of homecare means offering the services of an experienced team, many of whom have worked with Bedford’s Telopea for multiple years. Getting to know their clients means they can deliver the best service.

When you invite a carer or nurse to provide care in your own home, you need to know you are making the right choice – and that’s why Telopea managers only employ staff they would want in their own house.

The care company has built its reputation since providing domiciliary and nursing care to people throughout Bedford for over 15 years.

Director Brenda Saint James takes a hands-on approach to maintaining their excellent standards and will often conduct the first meeting with new clients and their families herself.

She explains: “Providing a high standard of care means having a high standard of staff and I do not have anyone working for me that I would not have in my own home.”

Staff turnover is very low and the training and experience of those staff are all-important factors.

Matching staff with new clients for wide range of care

Not only do the managements take time to get to know the strengths and skills of their 35 support staff and nurses, but they know their personalities too which means they can match them with new clients.

Having that high number of staff – and each with have individual skill and experience levels – means Telopea can offer a wide range of care, and ensure it is right for each client.

So whether you or a member of your family needs night care, day care or 24-hour cover, everyone is different and their needs can be met with the right care package in place.

Brenda says: “I like to get to know my clients and that’s what we are all about at this company – our patients.

“Generally I go out to see prospective patients, and I know the carers, so I usually know immediately once I’ve spoken to a patient, who should be the one giving the care.

“Everything is overseen by me or one of my nurses and we ensure that patients are not having to constantly explain themselves or their needs to different carers.”

Homecare choices

Their needs and the level of support can be very varied. It could be the most basic of tasks – helping someone to wash and dress for example, or a much more complex range of medical requirements.

Telopea has a broad range of staff, some of whom have lots of personal experience or qualifications in caring, while others are fully trained nurses.

A patient may need care a couple of times a week – help with some domestic chores for example – or they may need 24-hour live-in care.

Care needs also change – if someone’s condition deteriorates, or improves as they recover from injury or surgery - and that’s something that can be more easily picked up on when the patient has a regular carer, and sees the same people most of the time.

Not just the elderly

Of course older people are generally the ones who may require more care, but that stereotype is not always helpful.

Telopea has clients who have suffered strokes and have young families to look after, as well as patients in their forties who have early-onset dementia or have been in accidents so need extra support.

Nearly half of their clients are private customers, though the company is also a preferred supplier for Bedford Borough Council and is taken on to assess and provide homecare for patients who are being discharged from hospital.
