Emmaus in Carlton is appealing for support during the current crisis to ensure its support of formerly homeless people continues.

The charity supports 42 formerly homeless people by giving them accommodation, meaningful work experience, funded training and an opportunity to regain lost self-esteem to help rebuild their lives.

Funds are raised through its popular home store charity shop and bistro - but the temporary closure due to the coronavirus lockdown poses a significant risk to the charity.

Steve Scott, one of the beneficiaries of Emmaus Village Carlton, said: “I spent all my life working hard for very good companies. I was living a great life but beneath it there was a different person, someone who was struggling with keeping up with this persona and eventually this led to me having problems with alcohol. My depression levels hit rock bottom and I lost my job and home. If it wasn’t for Emmaus, I would never have turned my life around. They have given me a place to live and the support I need, as well as the chance to work every day and the sense of self-worth that comes with that.”

Although no-one can drop off clothes or items of furniture to Emmaus during the lockdown, the charity is hoping through its website, you will donate cash.

Angela Foll, chief community officer at Emmaus Village Carlton, said: “The people we support are staying at home and we’re trying to keep everyone safe. Our home store and bistro are closed but the support we offer to formerly homeless people continues. It is vital we do all we can to ensure everyone’s wellbeing and keep a roof over their head.
