During the pandemic, with the rules of social distancing, organising a funeral - should you have to - can become even more stressful.

Bedford's Clarabut and Plumbe funeral director Olivia Goodwin has contacted Bedford Today on how the coronavirus has changed things.

So if you’re in the unfortunate situation of having to organise a funeral, here are the things you need to know.

Am I going to be able to give my loved one the send off that I want?

While you may not be able to have everybody you want there at the moment, you can still organise the funeral you want for your loved one. Your loved one can be buried or cremated. You are able to have flowers. You can have readings, music and a hearse.

Bedford Crematorium is still holding funeral services. Although many churches and other religious venues are closed, religious leaders continue to conduct funerals.

Can I visit the funeral director?

The vast majority of funerals are now being arranged by telephone or email.

It's worth noting there are restrictions in place at the Chapel of Rest that may affect families.

How many people can attend a funeral?

At Bedford Crematorium, services are limited to immediate family only. The Church of England is no longer holding funerals in its churches, but services are being held either at the crematorium or at graveside. Different venues will have their own restrictions, but your funeral director can find out what they are for you.

How will I get to the funeral?

Due to the Government’s social distancing guidelines you will have to make your own arrangements for travelling to the funeral.
