Bedford Borough Council has arranged with bus companies to give bus pass holders free travel during peak times.

Normally, bus pass holders would pay £1 to travel before 9.30am, but with shops in the town centre offering special opening times first thing in the morning for older people to do any shopping that they need to, it is hoped that this change will make it a little easier for them.

People are urged to pay heed to the government guidance to stop the spread of coronavirus, and follow social distancing measures as far as is possible.

Mayor Dave Hodgson said “Local shops are really pulling out the stops to help older people during this extraordinary time, and as a council we want to do all we can to help.

"By getting rid of the £1 concessionary fare, we hope to make it a little easier for people to get into town and take advantage of these special early shopping hours for older people so they can get their necessary shopping done, while keeping safe and social distancing as much as possible.”
