Bedford Medic Clinic offers face-to-face GP appointments

The Covid pandemic and subsequent backlog of patients waiting to see GPs and have routine hospital appointments, has meant a long wait for some simple, but much-needed, treatments and check-ups.

Bedford’s Medic Clinic is filling that gap and owner and GP Asif Khan said demand for its services had been unprecedented.

The Medic Clinic is private medical clinic based in the heart of Bedford, offering various services from GP and consultant appointments to physiotherapy and ultrasound services. Their mission is to promote excellence in healthcare.

“We are a practice with a lot of ethics,” said Asif “Primarily we want to help people.”

He said he was concerned at the number of routine appointments and checks that, because of NHS pressures, were not being carried out, and explained that minor ailments, which can be diagnosed and treated quickly, could lead to more serious complications and illnesses if left unchecked.

Range of services

The Medic Clinic offers a range of services and face-to-face appointments. It has two GPs, a specialist in skin conditions, nurses, hospital consultants, a specialist in women’s health, a physiotherapist and a paramedic.

Services include women’s health – including diagnosis and treatment for endometriosis, pregnancy, fertility issues and menopause; dermatology including minor surgery for skin tags etc and histology (checking out skin blemishes and tags for cancer), and various screening services including ultrasound and blood tests.

The clinic also offers Covid testing, including for travel purposes.

You can have a regular GP appointment to discuss any health issue, and the Medic Clinic can issue prescriptions just like when you visit your NHS GP.

Asif, who himself works for the NHS’s 111 service, said the mix of expertise meant they could carry out a range of tests and minor treatments at the clinic.

“We are a small team but very experienced at our jobs,” he said.

Early diagnosis is vital

“Our primary focus is health screening,” said Asif. “We are all about preventing health conditions before they start, or preventing them becoming worse.”

Screenings can include taking swabs, doing ultrasound scans and blood tests to give a general healthcheck or to investigate a particular issue.

More time for patients

The Medic Clinic understands how and why the NHS is under such pressure and can offer patients more time to discuss their concerns.

And the cost isn’t prohibitive either – the Medic Clinic is significantly cheaper than the average private healthcare provider with a consultation appointment typically costing about £45, including any prescriptions and blood screening costing about £60.

It opened its premises on the High Street in July 2020 – but demand has been so high it is now expanding into the next door shop and two new consulting rooms and a waiting room will be added.
