Staff and students from Redborne Upper School who went on an educational trip to Rome and Naples at the weekend have not returned to school.

The upper school in Ampthill followed guidance from Public Health England (PHE) and Department for Education throughout the duration of the trip, they left on Friday, March 6, and returned on Monday, March 9.

With the news on Monday night that the whole of Italy would be covered by restrictions - not just the northern areas (Category 1) which were in lockdown at the weekend - the school informed all students and staff who had travelled of the latest advice from the government, which was to self-isolate for 14 days.

A spokesperson for Redborne Upper School said: "The classics trip from Redborne Upper School to Rome and Naples in Italy returned on 9 March 2020.

"Up until the evening of 9 March 2020, government advice was that travellers returning from a category 2 area of Italy did not need to self-isolate unless they had symptoms.

"Advice changed overnight to all travellers returning from Italy to having to stay indoors and avoid contact with other people.

"All 56 students and 6 staff who were on the trip were immediately informed before school began on Tuesday morning and they are not in school and are at home for the recommended period of 14 days.

"At all times we kept a constant check on and followed the advice of the gov.uk website regarding travel to Italy and this includes the change of advice overnight on the 9/10 March 2020."
