Bedford Free School (BFS) was planning a trip to Paris for Year 9 pupils - but has instead decided to go that extra mile for the needy during the pandemic.

Using daily allotted exercise time, nearly 30 staff from the school are hoping to run, walk or cycle the equivalent of the return distance to Paris, approximately 600 miles, throughout May to raise £1,000 for Bedford Food Bank.

James Rawlins, head of history, who first suggested the idea, said: “The current global pandemic is affecting our community in so many ways, we wanted to be able to give something back.

"I suggested the idea to staff and in typical BFS style I was inundated with colleagues who wanted to help. By the morning of May 7, we had already reached 300 miles and received over £700 in donations which is incredible, we really want to thank everyone for their support.

"If you see us whilst you're out and about on your daily exercise, please do give us a cheer, from at least two metres away."
