Clearing another route to university

STUDENTS across the country will make their final trip to school this time next week for A-Level results day.

But while many will pick up the scores they were hoping for on August 16 some will fall short - which is why specially-trained staff at the University of Bedfordshire will be
manning a hotline to guide students through their options.

The office will open at 8.30am with more than 50 staff manning the phones, and there will also be a range of academics on hand to offer advice.

Patricia Murchie, the university’s director of admissions, said: “Clearing can be a stressful time for students. Some may have achieved better
results than they expected and others may not have achieved their predicted grades.

“Whatever the reason, our advise is don’t panic. Take time to research the right course and university for you. Check websites. Ask for advice.

“What you learn and
experience at university will set you up for whatever career you choose.”

Clearing is designed for
students who have either not received any offers from universities, have declined the offers they have received, or have not achieved the results needed for their course. It is also for
prospective students who apply to The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) after the June 30 deadline.

As well as the phone lines the university’s Luton campus will be open next Thursday where staff and academics will be on hand.

Anyone who brings their qualifications can also check if they can get a place.

Samantha Barry-Wilson, said that she was “heart-
broken” when she got her A-level results, but after reviewing her options on results day she has moved forward to a successful academic career.

She said: “I thought that was it and I would never go to university.

“But I went through
clearing, came to Bedfordshire and never looked back.

“I now teach the very BSc Sports Therapy I studied.”
