She said: "I created a short stop motion video as I thought it was a great way to inform people of the importance of hand washing in a fun and engaging way.

"I was shocked once I found out I had been shortlisted, (especially as it’s an international competition) but obviously very excited as it is holds a very important message.

"Ignaz Semmelweis should be an inspiration to us all because no matter how many obstacles he came across he never gave up and in my eyes he’s a true unsung hero!"

Laxmi Patel, Nikeisha's mum, said: : "It is an Oxford University competition, she looked at the person who did work on hand washing technique which is really topical at the moment.

"It's a visual video and she really enjoyed making it, she has good feedback which has been positive for her.

"She has been shortlisted which is an amazing achievement, however the fight is not over yet.

"The most viewed video on YouTube receives the Audience Award so it would be wonderful if the Bedfordshire community could get behind her and support the future of medicine by viewing and sharing her video."

Sharmila, a friend of the family, said: "It's a really good video and really educational, in the current climate I think it's really important that children know the importance of washing your hands properly.

"She could also encourage and inspire other girls to get involved in STEM subjects."
