Small businesses ‘ambitious for growth’

A huge majority of small and medium businesses in the region are expecting to grow over the next 12 months, a survey has revealed.

The recent survey by Business Link showed 84 per cent of SME owners and managers in the East of England are planning to grow their business in the next 12 months.

But help is welcomed. The survey also revealed that more than half of these ambitious entrepreneurs feel they would benefit from advice on how to achieve successful growth.

More than a quarter of those asked said they were in need of help and advice to improve the future of their business.

A further 22.9% saying they feel confident about their enterprise as a whole, but would like guidance on how to plan for growth.

Malcolm Williamson, Head of Information and Intelligence at Business Link, said: “These results clearly show that local businesses are determined in their pursuit of growth and are poised to make the most of the professional advice available to them locally.

“This is why Business Link is running a series of dedicated Planning for Growth workshops in Bedfordshire – covering everything from understanding aims and inspirations to developing a growth plan for future success.

“More than 600 entrepreneurs have attended Planning for Growth since its creation and we’re now urging even more businesses in the area to join them in accessing the support they need to plan for a successful future.”

Attendees will come away from the session having developed a Business Growth Plan and will benefit from the continued support of a Business Link telephone-based adviser to help them put this into action.

Attendees working with an adviser may also be eligible for a High Growth Grant of up to £2,500 from the East of England Development Agency, to help them achieve the goals set out in their plan.

Williamson continues: “Growing a business means different things to different people, but whether they are looking for guidance on increasing sales, maximising profits or taking on more staff, entrepreneurs in Bedfordshire can depend on the great support available from Business Link every step of the way.”
