The Adzuna Job Index for June 2013, commissioned by jobstoday.co.uk the organisers of the Get Hired Milton Keynes Careers Fair, shows there are some 504,913 live vacancies in UK, up 2.5 per cent over 12 months, a possible sign economic growth is driving job creation.

Milton Keynes is in 10th place in the best areas list, with 1.91 jobseekers chasing every vacancy. The best area, Aberdeen, has nearly three jobs for every jobseeker.

The worst area to find a job, Salford, has more than 76 jobseekers for every vacancy.

Flora Lowther, head of research at Adzuna, said: “It is great to see the economy’s recovery feeding through into the jobs market. Employment levels have once again increased at the same time as rise in job vacancies. While this is positive news, we are not out of the woods yet and rates of pay in Britain remain a serious issue.

“The current average advertised salary in the UK stands at £33,414, a decrease of 2.1 per cent over the past 12 months. In real terms, wages fell 4.9 per cent year on year – meaning the average employee in Britain is £1,712 per annum worse off than they were this time last year.”

There are more vacancies than those looking for work in Aberdeen, Cambridge and Guildford, according to the research.

Growth sectors in the summer have been in retail and hospitality, with top employers in the sector this summer include Sainsbury’s, The Marriott Hotel Group and Marks & Spencer. Farmers and manufacturers have also been looking to take on extra staff to meet heightened consumer demand.

The Get Hired Milton Keynes Careers Fair on Friday, September 20, is being held to put employers in touch with candidates.

Joanne Harwood, group category manager at Johnston Press. the owners of jobstoday.co.uk, said a job fair is a great opportunity for businesses to fill their vacancies with the candidates they are looking for.

She added: “We hope that many businesses will take advantage of this opportunity to showcase their company as a top employer while filling their vacancies and connecting with all the talented individuals in the Milton Keynes area.”

Get Hired Milton Keynes Careers Fair will be held at stadium:mk and will be promoted in Johnston Press titles in the area, in print and online, to encourage candidates to attend.
