Fifty new jobs are being created at an ‘energy recovery’ plant near Bedford.

Covanta is seeking to immediately recruit 15 “protectors of tomorrow” at its Rookery South facility at Stewartby, close to the M1.

The rest of the posts will be phased in over the coming months as part of the company’s ‘local employment plan’.

Facility manager Ian Judd said: “This is an exciting time as we start to grow the Rookery South operations and maintenance team.

“We have five shift plant operators and 10 assistant plant operator roles available and we are committed to sourcing locally wherever possible.

“We’re working with local authorities and Jobcentre Plus to promote these excellent opportunities to local people with the right skills.”

Based in a former clay quarry, Rookery South Recovery Facility has already created hundreds of construction and supply chain jobs during the three-year build process.

Set to open in 2022, it will process more than 545,000 tonnes of residual waste - which cannot be sensibly recycled or composted - into electricity that will power homes and businesses.

Covanta is a world leader in sustainable solutions, handling 21 million tons of waste every year.
