Hedda Gabler completes Chaos Fest at R & D

THE central trilogy of Royal & Derngate’s Festival Of Chaos will be completed by a new version of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play Hedda Gabler, which takes to the Royal stage from July 6 to 28.

Emma Hamilton swaps one powerful woman (she plays Anne Seymour in the TV series The Tudors) for the title role while the part of Ejlert Lovborg is played by Lex Shrapnel, who starred in the 2009 remake of Minder and was seen last year in the World War II film Captain America.

Royal audiences see the return of stage and screen favourite Jay Villiers, who appeared in last year’s production of In Praise Of Love. The cast also features dinnerladies actress Sue Wallace, Matti Houghton and Janice McKenzie.

Stifled by the boredom of her comfortable existence, Hedda finds herself caught in a claustrophobic marriage. Consumed by the burning desires within her, and haunted by a half-forgotten ghost, she sets out on a destructive path that pits her lust for drama and beauty against the social conventions of the day.

It was seen on Broadway in 2006 starring Cate Blanchett in the title role and receives its European premiere in Northampton under the direction of the venue’s artistic director Laurie Sansom.
