Triumph, tragedy and a great British sporting tradition combine in a play coming to The Place in Bedford .

The Swan Theatre Company presents Epsom Downs by Howard Brenton from Tuesday March 1 to Saturday March 5.

It’s set on Derby day in the Silver Jubilee year of 1977. On Epsom Downs, horse trainers, policemen, families and socialites rub shoulders with drunks, travellers, buskers and bookmakers.

The tension builds as the great race approaches, the sun beats down, the beer flows freely and lives are changed forever.

David Baxter directs a cast playing more than 50 characters in this fast-moving comedy which celebrates the suspense, anguish , triumph and tragedy of a great sporting occasion.
