Two intriguing plays come to the Place Theatre in Bedford courtesy from next week.

The Swan Theatre Company is opening its new season with a double bill.

The Interview Stage is written by Chris Loft and focuses on a character called Martin Brown, who has an interview for a new teaching position – but it feels more like an interrogation, in which secrets from his past probed.

The Interview Stage is described a new one-act play about teachers, those they teach and those they answer to. Local writer Chris Loft has written a comedy with a hint of malice that has been described as “extremely relevant” and “a rib-aching lesson of comedy”. It is a finalist at the British Theatre Challenge.

The other play, What Would Helen Mirren Do?, is written by Josie Melia.

It’s about Susan, who has worked at a supermarket in Oldham most of her life. Busy with her job, her kids and her elderly mother, she’s never given much thought to role models until she’s training for promotion and is forced to adopt one. But her life changes dramatically when she starts to ask herself “what would Helen Mirren do?”.

One actor plays Susan, her boss, her management trainer, her grown-up kids and a host of other characters in Josie Melia’s humorous and moving play.

The show runs from September 16 to 19 at the theatre, which is in Bradgate Road. Tickets cost £9 or £7.50 for concessions. Visit www.the
