140 youngsters take part in K-Nex Challenge 2008 event at Cranfield University

Eager engineers of the future gathered to solve a construction conundrum as Cranfield University hosted the K-Nex Challenge 2008.

More than 140 youngsters from 47 of Bedfordshire's lower and primary schools descended on the campus last month to build a fire engine out of K-Nex construction pieces within a two-hour time limit.

The pupils also had to ensure the model had an extending ladder, mounted on a turntable, which could be turned by a crank handle using gears.

Judges highly commended the model made by a team from Milton Ernest Lower School, but teams from Downside Lower School in Dunstable and Bramingham Primary School in Luton won the event.

Both teams will now compete in the East of England final later this year where they will be fighting for a place in the national final.
