Boy who helps autistic friend is nominated for Young People of the Year award
A pupil who helps his autistic friend through school has received top marks from his teachers who have nominated him for the Bedfordshire Young People of the Year award.
Ethan Brown, of Larkway, Brickhill, is a constant support to his best friend Harry Brown, 11, who has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism.
The 11-year-olds' friendship allows Harry to attend mainstream school and remain in class with his other friends at Beauchamp Middle School.
Ethan was nominated by the school's deputy headteacher Amanda Quince. She said: "Ethan is an exceptional young man who is held in high regard by his peers and staff alike.
"He has an infectious and positive nature and is an inspiration to many. He is patient, understanding and compassionate beyond his years."
She added: "He often volunteers to go the extra mile when there are jobs to be done, and he never complains about the daily demands of this challenging role."
Sue Brown, Harry's mother, said Ethan has a calming effect on her son, and if it was not for him Harry would struggle and have more problems at school and away from the classroom.
Harry said: "Ethan helps me understand things when I am not sure. He helps me calm down when I'm frustrated and angry. Ethan understands me and accepts me the way I am and he is a really good friend."
Ethan will now be in the running for a £1,000 prize when he is judged against other nominees in the Bedfordshire Young People of the Year final.
He said "When Harry is frustrated and angry I calm him down by talking and reassuring him and trying to make him forget what's upset him. I encourage him to get involved with work.
"I'm surprised but happy to be nominated for the award."
Nominations for the Duke of Bedford Young People of the Year award close on Friday, July 25.
Nominees must be aged between ten and 25 years old and live, work or study in Bedfordshire. For more information visit www.yopey.org
