Latest addition to Przewalski breed is victory for park's conservation programme
Two newborn foals at Woburn Safari Park have been greeted as a victory for more than a century of conservation.
Itani is a baby Przewalski, pronounced 'psesh-val-skee', who was born at the park last month.
The breed is the oldest type of horse in the world, and until recently was extinct in the wild before being reintroduced in China, Mongolia andKazakhstan. Przewalskis have a stocky build compared to domestic horses, and can grow to a height of 1.32 metres.
The breed was saved from complete extinction at the turn of the 20th century, thanks in part to Herbrand Russell, the 11th Duke of Bedford, who brought 15 of the horses back to England from
Mongolia.
The world population today is descended from 31 that were in captivity in 1945.
