Wyvern worthy winners
Wyvern were 34-27 winners over Evesham Red in their Premier Division Two encounter at the Bunyan Centre at the weekend.
In front of a large crowd, Wyvern gained an early lead and, with the experienced Charlotte South dominating at WA and Helen Sears back at C, they were able to drive the ball through to the shooting partnership of Shaunagh Craig and Jo Shortt, with some slick passing.
Evesham gradually clawed their way back into the game though as the quarter ended 10-10.
The second period saw the defensive trio of versatile England U17 Clare Drakeford at WD, Verona Tomlin at GD and Josie Huckle at GK, working tirelessly to turnover the ball and shut down the very physical Evesham shooters as they led 18-15.
Evesham edged the third quarter to reduce the gap to 26-25, but Wyvern were in no mood to concede as Huckle and Tomlin shut down the Evesham shooters to only two goals in the last quarter.
The mid-court, led by the hard-working South at WA, delivered some great feeds into Craig and Shortt, who produced a flurry of stylish goals, while Craig was voted player of the match.
Wyvern take on local rivals Turnford at the Bunyan on Sunday, starting at 3pm.
In Regional Division Two, Wyvern IIs won 37-26 at Comberton in Cambridgeshire to keep their promotion hopes alive.
Wyvern edged the first quarter 10-7 before a change of personnel at GA saw Emma Wilkinson take to the court to link with Grace Wyatt GS, while Louise Powell and Steph Holyoak swapped positions in mid court.
Unfortunately the combinations didn’t gel straight away as Wyvern’s lead was reduced by a point, but knowing their season would fall flat if they did not pick up their game, the visitors were a changed outfit in the third quarter.
Emma Ellis GK, Bea Skingsley GD and Claire Southam WD, replacing Emily St John, began to turn over Comberton’s attack more frequently as they moved 27-19 in front.
The last quarter saw Wyvern move the ball with more fluency and patience as Cheryl Wilson GS and Wyatt GA in the circle closed out the game, while Ellis was named player of the game.
This weekend, Wyvern entertain top of the table Thoroughbreds on Saturday, starting at 11am.
Regional Division One side Team Beds did not have a match this week and will be back in action against Eastwood on Saturday.
