THE Bedford & District Netball League held thits second Cup finals night at the Bunyan Centre last week.

In the Fourth Division final, champions Cranfield Lions took on Wilstead and took an immediate lead after some excellent interceptions by GK Beth Jackson.

Lions took the first quarter 12-7, with Beth Noble and Fran Smith in fine form, and then claimed the second 9-4 despite some good centre court work by Wilstead’s Chloe Newbury.

The third quarter also went Cranfield’s way, 10-2, while they claimed the last quarter 15-6 to ensure they did a league and cup double.

Runners-up Wyvern Grangers Fusion took on Westoning Phoenix in the Second Division final as champions Maulden Panthers had been knocked out.

Fusion grabbed the first quarter 13-8 after some top shooting by Ellie Corcoran, while they also won the second quarter 13-8

After the break, Grangers took a 4-0 lead despite some strong play by GK Louise Rouse and although Wyvern tried to fight back, Fusion claimed a 9-6 victory.

The last final for the season pitted Premier League champions First Choice against league runners-up Wyvern Grangers Flames.

A pulsating first quarter saw First Choice lead just 6-5, before Dee Stigwood came on as GA for Flames and went goal for goal despite some fine play from GD Verona Tomlin.

It continued to be nip and tuck as Grangers took the second quarter by a mere 8-7.

The third quarter was just as close as First Choice GK Sherma Joseph made some outstanding interceptions but Flames won 7-6 to lead by just one goal.

The final quarter saw First Choice run away with the victory though as Flames’ shooting became hesitant allowing duo Sandra and Jade Tatham to put their side 4-0 ahead.

Flames tried to fight back, but a long-range Lorna Kelly goal sealed a 6-2 final quarter win for First Choice and the cup too.

The plate winners for Division Four were Christians in Sport, for Division Two Cranfield Tigers and for the Premier Division Wyvern Grangers Blaze, while the umpires were Steph Holyoak, Jeanette Johnson, Rebecca Rowley Smith, Louise Harwood, Bern Palmer and Cathie Carter.

International Umpire, Gary Burgess, presented all the trophies which also included the Mary Bulloch Administration Trophy from the East Region Netball that was awarded to Theresa Cusack and the Regional League Division Two runners-up trophy, awarded to Wyvern Grangers.
