Wheldon runner-up in Chicagoland
Former Bedford Schooler excels from seventh on the grid
On song Dan Wheldon finished runner-up in a thrilling race at the Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday.
National Guard Panther Racing driver finished just 0.0423 behind winner Dario Franchitti after starting sevent on the grid.
The former Bedford School pupil said: "The guys on our National Guard Panther Racing team did a phenomenal job tonight, you can see that they rebounded tonight for a really strong performance.
"And that's what's fantastic about the Panther guys – it's their never say die attitude, and we're a close-knit group and there are a lot of good guys with us and when the chips are down if you've got all those guys on your side you're going to be OK.
"They do a great job and they deserved this result.
"When it counts I don't know if there's any team better than Panther out there; our last two pit stops in particular were absolutely phenomenal.
"There was some exciting racing out here tonight and that's how it should be.
"It's very difficult out here sometimes and you have to race against people you trust and you have to give people room; that's why I like working with certain people more than others.
"To be honest at the end we were doing a great job working with Dario (Franchitti), because he's always so clean and professional.
"He's a true gentleman out there and he's a tremendous racecar driver.
"For me especially tonight I enjoyed having a teammate – Ed is a hard worker, he's a team player and we work very well together.
"It's definitely a big benefit to our team and I enjoy that."
It was Wheldon's third top five and seventh top 10 finish of the season in the IZOD IndyCar Series season.
Wheldon, who led the race for 14 laps, remains in 10th position in the standings.
