A late winner from Richard Evans saw Bedford win 3-2 at Wapping in their East Men’s Hockey League encounter at the weekend.
The visitors started well as Dan Mason and Stefan Taylor provided good passes for the midfield trio of Stuart Robson, Alex Drummond and Alyn Meredith, as the deadlock was broken when Andy Fensom shimmied his way into space and found Welsh international Meredith who fired into the bottom corner.
Wapping were back in the game though when a counter-attack saw Taylor concede a short corner which was dispatched into the top corner.
The hosts then had the lead when, from another short corner, Simon Dolan made a fine save, but the rebound was tucked away via the facemask of an unfortunate Mason.
Some strong words at half time followed, while the fresh legs of Matt Wilson and Lee Hoggart were added to the midfield.
Their youth and desire to run contributed to the aggressive and direct start as Evans won possession from a home player, to find Meredith, who twisted and turned before firing in a low cross that was deflected into the net.
Fired up, Bedford went for the jugular and the winner arrived when Evans slotted home from close range.
The visitors’ defence, with Mason and Taylor, impressing, held firm, while Meredith took the man of the match award
