Trophy dreams are still alive
Sunday football round-up
Saints FC kept their silverware dreams alive by reaching the final of the Leighton Buzzard Sunday League Division Four Cup with a 3-1 victory against London Luton in the semi-finals.
London Luton are the only side to have beaten Saints in the league this season, and took an early lead when Saints' defence went to sleep and London Luton scored from close range at the back post.
Battling hard in the midfield, Saints looked to open Luton up and levelled just before the break with a strike from J McCary.
The second half was equally as competitive, with Saints keeper Alex Worth being kept very busy in the early stages as the pace of London Luton's forwards gave the Saints plenty to think about.
As the second half unfolded it was the Saints who began to win the midfield battle and London Luton found themselves under pressure.
And Saints seized the lead when a well-worked free-kick was dispatched low and hard with 25 minutes to go, leaving the opposition keeper with no chance.
With London Luton forced to rely heavily on counter-attacks, both teams injected more energy into their sides from the bench.
But the game was settled when M. Smith converted a chance at the back post to give Saints an unassailable 3-1 lead.
Saints dominated the closing stages but failed to convert their chances as London Luton battled hard right until the end.
Man of the match was midfielder M. Collins as Saints progressed to their second final in as many week.
Saints are now focused on their Division Four campaign where, if they win their four games in hand, they will go top.
A game that started in the best possible way for the USL Rams quickly turned into an absolute nightmare as Luton Renegades fought back from 4-1 down to triumph 8-5 in the quarter-finals of the Luton Sunday League Cup.
With a host of players out due to injuries, USL manager Kieran Fay had to play in a makeshift defence.
Rams raced into a 2-0 lead within seconds of the kick off.
Simon Ridgeway slotted home the first and moments later Terry Taverner beat two defenders and poked home.
Renegades pulled a goal back from a swift counter-attack, only for Ridgeway to restore Rams' two-goal cushion.
USL's man of the match Taverner then rammed home his second and, after superbly beating his marker, he squeezed the ball past the keeper at the near post.
Renegades, though, grabbed two quick goals to make it 4-3, only for Rams to re-establish their two-goal lead at the break when Ridgeway completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in stoppage time.
However, USL fell apart after the break and were put to the sword by Renegades who netted five times, as Rams suffered their worst defeat of the season.
