Town rowers shine at Fours and Sculls Head
Bedford rowers were out in force on the River Great Ouse on Sunday in the Spring Fours and Small Boats Head.
Over 400 boats raced the 2,000m time trial in over 50 events in eight divisions. Competitors ranged in from 14 to over 70.
Bedford Rowing Club had a highly successful day, winning six events.
The fastest time of the day was set by the host club's Leon Taylor, joined by Chris Callow, Chris Durrant and Paul Hamblett, of Star Club, completing the course in 6mins 18secs.
Bedford RC's real star of the day though was Sam Helliwell, who has only been rowing for 15 months but won three events. These included the senior coxless fours where Sam was joined by Michael Hardy, James Beechinor and Stuart Lewis, narrowly beating Bedford School by two seconds. Sam then went on to win intermediate two pairs with Michael and intermediate three pairs with James. In other events, Mike Harris won veteran F sculls and was joined by Tom Robb to win veteran D double sculls. Phil Dickens rounded the day off well with his first win in veteran novice sculls.
Star Club had eight wins all told. Callow and Durrant teamed up again to race in the intermediate one double sculls and won by a considerable margin.
Mick Parker and Ewa Whiteman claimed the veteran D double sculls, with Parker also triumphing in his single scull racing in the veteran D event.
The remaining four wins for Star then came from the junior squad – the men's novice quad of Ross Mizen, Matthew Tapley, Richard Hepher and Will Stockton, the women's intermediate three quad of Eleanor Grimley, Charlotte Cook, Ruby Ellam and Victoria Huckle, a women's junior 15 coxed quad consisting of Laura Haggerwood, Claire Hughes, Amy Stockton and Alanah Hamilton, with cox Aiden Grimley, and the women's junior 16 single sculls, won by Eleanor Grimley. Bedford School and Bedford High School won three events each and Dame Alice Harpur School claimed the women's novice coxless pairs.
The next rowing event in town is the Bedford Amateur Regatta on Saturday, May 9, from the County Bridge to the Suspension Bridge.
Bedford RC has sent a large contingent to a training camp in Northern Ireland, and further details can be found at www.bedfordregatta.co.uk
