Titles galore for Bedford as they relinquish crown
Bedford & County. Rebecca Murray, Kelly Rodd and Alice Bergin with their medals. wk 07.
BEDFORD & County AC signed off their Chiltern Cross-Country League season with a good performance at a freezing cold Wing at the weekend.
The first race of the day saw Maisie Relton secure a maiden victory in the U11 girls race, having placed second in the previous four fixtures, as she won overall silver.
She was supported by Francesca Johnson who had her best run to third. Equally impressive was Oliver Davies, who placed fifth in the U11 boys race, while there was a second place finish for Erin McCaffray in the U13 girls race.
Tom Angell continued his rich vein of form with a fine second place in the U13 boys race, while Will Mullins had a strong run to finish fifth as he claimed bronze in the overall championship.
Kelly Rodd was runner-up in the U15 girls race, as she took gold overall, and was ably backed up by Sarah Kerr in fifth, who took overall silver.
Jono Janes, meanwhile, produced a masterful display to take his first Chiltern League victory in the U15 boys race, with Jack Barraclough finishing joint first overall and sharing gold.
Rebecca Murray triumphed in the Junior/U17 women’s race, to claim the overall U17 title, with Alice Burgin just behind in fourth as she won gold in the overall Junior women’s competition. Jack Douglas took divisional victory in the U17 men’s race, but had to settle for second overall, while Matt Bray had a fine run for second.
As a result of illness and injury, it was a severely weakened Bedford & County AC men’s squad that took to the field.
Bedford’s Welsh international Matt Janes quickly stamped his authority on the Senior men’s six-mile race.
In the leading group from the start, Janes surged mid race to open up a winning gap which he comfortably maintained to the finish.
Richard Henderson had his best ever run in this league finishing in an excellent sixth place.
He was backed up by super veteran Alan Turnbull whose excellent 10th place belied his years, with fellow veteran Martyn Blackwell in 100th.
With only four finishers in this 10-to-score competition, Bedford’s hopes of retaining both the men’s and club title were dashed, as Bedford slipped down into third team place overall.
With no runners competing at all, the Junior men’s seemingly unassailable lead of over 300 points evaporated away, leaving the team in a disappointing second place, while the Veteran team ended up out of the medals in fourth spot.
Matt Bergin was crowned the overall Senior men’s champion, with the best four out of five scores to count.
In the overall competition the Junior men came runners-up, the U17 men finished first, the U15 boys second and the U13 boys third. The Junior/U17 ladies triumphed overall with the U15 and U13 girls both third.
