BEDFORD Tigers found top of the table St Ives Roosters just too good as they went down 54-35 in their East England Regional League clash on Saturday.

After a promising Tigers start which had St Ives camped on their own line for 10 minutes, the Roosters scored against the run of play and turned the tide of the first half.

They added a further six points to their unconverted first effort minutes later and began to look dominant in both attack and defence.

A moment of brilliance from Paul Ryder set up Colin Liddell to dance over on the wing for the Tigers as the pendulum swung back in the visitors favour, with a second try from Lee Walker and a drop goal just before the half time whistle putting Bedford 13-10 in front at the midway point.

Injuries to Richard Harris and Ollie Banfield reduced the Tigers options from the interchange, and the Roosters went up through the gears to race into a 36-13 lead before Bedford managed to stem the flow.

Just as they did in their last outing, the Tigers produced a wonderful 20 minutes of rugby, scoring three tries in the process.

Back rower Ricky Tompkins kick-started the flurry with a solo effort before Craig Walker notched up a quick brace of opportunistic tries from hooker.

Rob Ashton converted all but one of the tries to bring the Tigers back to within touching distance at 36-29, but the Roosters proved why they are the competition’s top team in 2012 by killing the game off.

They reasserted themselves with in the final quarter with two more scores before a late effort from Pat Murphy, who showed great awareness to find space and power over the line.

With time for just one more play from the restart, the Roosters’ talismanic hooker David Sykes snatched an opportunistic try to have the final word and push the scoreboard past 50 for the second season running.

The Tigers now prepare themselves for the vist of the Portsmouth Navy Seahawks to Putnoe Woods this Saturday for the Cup semi-final.
