Nineteen of top-performing Star Club’s crews were successful at the Bedford Head of the River race on Sunday, October 14

Wins came for all of the club’s racing squads, including women’s Masters D coxed four who clocked 8.16mins and the mixed Masters coxed four who timed 7.56mins. The Masters squad also won the Masters D/E coxless fours in 7.02mins.

The women’s squad made a promising start to the season by winning all the events they entered. Sisters Rachel Armstrong and Clare Keech won two events in their first race in a double scull and the coxed four of Catherine Mulvaney, new women’s captain Jenny Morling, Nicola Benavente, Louise Partridge and cox Helen Thompson won the IM2 category, beating strong opposition from Birmingham RC.

Morling and Mulvaney then went on to win the IM3 double sculls with Morling completing her hat-trick with victory in the IM3 single sculls.

Unfortunately Partridge, Benavente and Jordan Bruce were without opposition at IM2 and IM1 single sculls level, but each of them did achieve fast practice times, while Benavente, Bruce and Morling will be attending the GB trials in November.

From the men’s squad, Leon Taylor and Will Eason competed at the Pairs Head the day before.

Over the 4km course from Chiswick to Hammersmith, they finished fifth overall and third in their category.

It was an outstanding result in a high quality field that included Olympic bronze medallist Alan Campbell, as they were the highest placed crew not based on the Thames.

On Sunday at Bedford they teamed up with Lloyd Mulkerrins Alex Miller and Laurence Owens to post the fastest time of the day in Senior coxed fours.

Along with wins in the Elite and IM1 sculls, IM3 pairs and IM1 coxed fours it proved a hugely successful weekend, while the Juniors won the J15 double sculls, J16 single sculls and J15 single sculls.
