Star looking for victory

Large contingent travelling to Peterborough

Star Club is sending 12 crews to this weekend's Peterborough Regatta, writes Ian Rowe.

They include the men's Senior 4 crew of James Gani, Mike Jones, James Black and Ian Herbert while James Robson and Mark Bavington take on one of the top events in Elite coxless pairs and also row in Senior 1 eights with Steve Colliver, Ian Rowe, Will Eason, Dan Hetherington, Rad Bertschinger, Ed Oxlade and cox Andy 'Termite' Darnell.

James Foley, Martin Melges, Richard Slaymaker and Tom Hetherington have entered Senior 2 coxed fours.

Chris Callow and Aron Price race in Senior 2 pairs along with Tom Hetherington and Pat Maynard while Callow also races in Senior 1 Singles sculls.

There is an all family affair for the Hetheringtons with Josh, Dan, Tom and Toby racing in the same boat in Senior 2 quad sculls.

Emily Turner, Sarah Hulance, Sally Gurney and Sue Jones race in the Senior 3 fours while the squad have also entered Senior 3 eights and novice single sculls.

Two of the Star Club World Class Start contingent, Joel Grant Jones and Tom Christie, are taking part in a national assessment camp based at the Nottingham rowing lake.

Paula Jardine, Talent Development coach said: "These monthly assessment camps bring together all the World Class start athletes and coaches from around the country.

"The camps could be held in Bedford, and help develop the town as a nationally recognized rowing venue, provided we had the Bedford Rowing Lake at Willington to provide the right facilities."

Andy Rowe, chairman of the lake project said: "The national world class start programme would without doubt bring Olympic class rowers to our town today if we had the Bedford Lake in place.

"Provided the go-ahead is given this autumn we should still be able to attract such schemes to Bedford that have a direct connection with the 2012 London Olympics."

Rickie Josen, director of Star sponsor Permanent Fixtures added: "Bedford's ability to become a host town for the Olympics can only be significantly enhanced if the Bedford Lake gets the green light. That's the sort of positive action Bedford needs to be taking to show our commitment to being a host town."
