Skelton comeback is backed by returning trainer Sanders
Matt Skelton
BOXING: Matt Skelton’s trainer Kevin Sanders is convinced he’ll be on the title trail again soon.
Sanders guided the Bedford Bear to British, Commonwealth, European and world (WBU) heavyweight championship glory earlier in his career and he’s convinced they can be a success again after retiring two years ago.
He said: “I was perhaps a bit hasty making my decision to retire. I didn’t realise how much I would miss the game – it had been my life for over 30 years after all. Lots of people approached me after I retired with offers to train fighters and I was tempted. And then when Matt said he wanted to fight again I decided to re-apply for my trainer’s licence and it’s all systems go again now.”
Skelton fights Tom Dallas of Kent over eight rounds at Hillsborough Leisure Centre on March 3 and it will be his first appearance in the ring since he reached the heavyweight ‘Prizefighter’ final in October 2009 when he lost to Michael Sprott. In 2008 he lost to Ruslan Chagaev on points when challenging for the WBA title.
“OK Matt’s 44 now but he’s the fittest 44-year-old you’ll ever see,” added Sanders.
“He’s like a butcher’s dog. You’ve got to remember that he never came into the game until he was 35 and without any amateur experience he won every accolade going. In 31 fights he’s never taken a beating.
“He’s been offered a three-fight deal by Frank Maloney Promotions and I reckon he’ll beat Dallas and then could well be fighting David Price, the English champion, for the British title after that because I reckon Tyson Fury will have relinquished his British and Commonwealth titles by then.”
Skelton has a record of 25 wins (20 of them by knockout) from 31 fights and won his first 18 contests. Dallas (12 wins from 13 bouts) lost to Liverpudlian Price last time out, albeit after taking the bout at very short notice.
