A packed Park Inn enjoyed a knockout evening of entertainment on Monday as Bedford ABC hosted its first home show of the 2012-13 season.
Bedford boxers were involved in six of the 12 bouts on the night with brothers Graham and Steve Shields really giving the crowd their money’s worth.
Graham was up against Slough’s short and speedy L Dyer. In a frantic opening round, Graham worked hard to find his range and claim the centre of the ring.
As the fight developed, the Bedford boxer found his pace, slipping Dyer’s shots and countering well.
In the final round he landed a series of flurries and kept his defence tight to secure a majority points victory. Later in the evening, the boxers were awarded the best bout of the night award.
Graham’s brother Steve was matched against Aylesbury’s S Fitzgerald. The younger sibling started off confidently tying to find his range and switching stance from orthodox to southpaw.
The gamble didn’t pay off though as the Bedford boy got caught with heavy right hands when he switched to southpaw.
Steve settled in the second and third rounds, managing to land some solid shots of his own before an explosive closing round culminated in a unanimous points victory for the Aylesbury boxer.
There were debut bouts on the evening for Darnell McWilliams and Nathan Lambert.
McWilliams secured a majority points win over Burslem’s A Aitken in a bout that saw the Bedford boxer receive a standing count and recover with plenty of heart.
McWilliams found success in the second half of the fight ensuring the perfect start to his amateur career.
Lambert squared up against another Burslem boxer in G Joburn. Looking more like a seasoned professional, Lambert was relaxed throughout the bout, claiming the centre of the ring and staying there.
He landed a healthy variation of shots, each one as devastating as the last as he was awarded a unanimous points victory for his efforts.
After a four-year break from the ring, young Luke Sampson made a successful comeback as he boxed Brighton’s J Ellis.
Sampson won the bout by way of majority decision and, despite some lethargic moments in the later rounds, was largely impressive with little sign of rust.
There was a disappointing end to the night for Bedford’s Ermal Dida, who was disqualified in the fourth and final round after receiving warnings about holding from the referee. His opponent, D Renfrew from Brighton, was awarded the decision as a result.
Alex Marshalleck topped the bill for the home club as he took on Slough’s S Wall. In a bout that resembled a chess match at times, the Bedford boxer landed some solid punches but didn’t do enough to convince the judges who awarded the bout to Wall by way of a majority decision.
Bedford ABC’s next home show will take place at the Park Inn on Monday, December 10. Anybody interested in booking a table or sponsorship should contact Bob Broomhall on 01234 391351.
