SATURDAY REPORT: Blues win again, Waders remain unbeaten
Wins for Rokermen and Potton, Reds draw but United lose on 50th anniversary
Biggleswade Town made it three games unbeaten this afternoon with a battling 1-1 home draw against a dogged and determined Rugby Town side who have their sights firmly set on regaining their place in the Southern League's Premier Division.
Relegated last term to the new Central Division, Rugby just edged the goalless opening half having hit the waders woodwork as early as the third minute while Dean Bull pulled off several magnificent reaction saves to deny the visitors' pacy forwards. But the home side were perhaps just as unlucky to see several half chances kept out by an equally good goalkeeper in Rugby's Dave Clark.
The opening goal on 55 minutes followed a Rugby free kick out wide on the right, the ball being cleared back to their centre forward Seb Hamilton whose cross towards Bull's far post was met by defender Nick Preston who had stayed up from the earlier free kick and he had the easy job of slotting home for 1-0.
But within six minutes it was all square as Paul Barnes sent in an angled 30 yard cross-cum-shot towards Rugby's far post and, while his teammate James Freshwater arrived at pace, the ball sailed past keeper Clark and entered the far side of the net for 1-1.
After that, both goalkeepers gave a magnificent display between the posts as the two sides looked for a winner, a handling offence by a Rugby team player was sadly followed by a needless 'boot up' challenge by Waders' Stuart Lochhead who was red carded with barely a minute remaining.
But Biggleswade remained solid until the final whistle for their second successive draw and fifth league point inside eight days and that delighted the afternoon's 127 paying spectators.
Over at Bell Close, Arlesey Town made it three wins out of three to remain top of the Central Division table with a 2-1 win away to last season's Beds FA Cup opponents Leighton Town.
However the Blues went behind on seven minutes when Copson opened the scoring for the home side although Harry Hunt levelled on 27 minutes while the winner came from Joel Mason just two minutes into the second half.
In the Spartan South Midlands Leaguee, Biggleswade United were celebrating their 50th anniversary although with seven first team regulars missing due to the wedding of Craig Mayrick and injuries, it probably wasn't the best day for Phil Child's team to host table-topping Tring Athletic who beat them 3-1!
Stotfold finally got themselves an SSML three pointer as they beat Colney Heath 2-0 away from home while Langford halted a run of defeats with a point from a 1-1 draw away to Harefield United.
In the United Counties League, Potton United travelled to last season's Division One whipping boys Burton Park Wanderers and after bowing out of the FA Cup the previous weekend 4-1 to Corby's Stewarts & Lloyds, they returned from Northamptonshire with three valuable points following a 3-1 Latimer Park victory.
