Bedford claim Chiefs scalp as Tomes comes to Goldington Road

Bedford Blues have continued their building for the 2010-11 season by signing Exeter Chiefs lock Sean Tomes.

The 25-year-old is the son of Scotland international Alan Tomes and has previously played for Newport Gwent Dragons and Newcastle Falcons while also spending time on loan at Doncaster during the 2007-8 season.

Standing at six foot six inches tall and weighing in at 120kg, Tomes is certain to make a huge impression in the Blues pack.

Speaking about the signing, director of rugby Mike Rayer said: "Sean has plenty of experience in the Premiership, Magners League and the Championship and I'm delighted that he has agreed to make the move to Goldington Road.

"It is important that we identified areas that needed strengthening and we hope Sean will have a massive impact on the squad."

Rayer also confirmed that four more players have agreed to extend their stay at with the club.

Captain and hooker Dan Richmond, fellow number two Chris Locke, scrum-half and backs coach Nick Walshe and number nine Darryl Veenendaal are all set to remain at the club.

Rayer added: "We have now secured the services of 20 of the current squad and that's very pleasing. There is still plenty of work to do however, and we are working hard behind the scenes to bring as much quality into the club as possible."
