Bedford director of rugby Mike Rayer has described Saturday’s game with Cornish Pirates as a game his side must bet at their best for.
The Blues head coach was speaking ahead of this weekend’s clash at Goldington Road with optimism, as his side look to back up their 48-10 victory over Cross Keys last Saturday.
Rayer said: “We are definitely looking for consistency and the performance on our travels last week was superb.
“We want to replicate that in front of our fans this Saturday. It is our last match before Christmas and with Bristol on the horizon in the league, we know there are big challenges ahead of us.
“So we need to show our quality immediately, starting against Pirates.”
The Goldington Road outfit head into Saturday’s fixture knowing their hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals in the British and Irish Cup are still alive.
Blues’ bonus point victory in Wales coupled with Doncaster’s last minute 31-30 victory over the Pirates, means second place in Pool 4 will be decided this weekend.
The Blues need a bonus point victory as well as results going their way elsewhere to claim one of the best runner-up spots and qualify for the last eight.
Rayer continued: “We know there is a slim chance of us qualifying now, and it’s the same for them.
“Yet if we don’t manage to get through we want to play our last match in the competition well and ensure we’re on a high for when we return to league action.
“It is important for us to concentrate on our performance levels and we need to lay down a marker against Pirates by putting down a good performance, as ultimately that is what you expect from a Bedford team.
“We know by the two matches we have played them in already it is going to be a tough match.
“But as a squad we will continue in our aim of improving our performances and that is no change on Saturday, so hopefully we can do that in front of our fans.”
