Bedford Blues have bolstered their front row options with the signing of hooker George Edgson from Wasps and tighthead prop David Spelman from Cambridge University for the 2016/17 Championship season.

Edgson, 20, already has Championship experience having spent the second half of last season with Rotherham Titans.

He also featured for National One side Blackheath and follows in the footsteps of Wasps colleagues Piers O’Conor and Alex Lundberg who joined the Blues from Wasps last season.

Standing at 6ft 1ins and weighing 110kg, the former England U18 star has joined on loan and will provide stiff competition for Sam James and Jacob Field in the battle for the number two jersey.

Spelman, 23, was part of the Cambridge team that suffered a narrow 12-6 defeat to Oxford in the Varsity game at Twickenham in December.

The prop, who is six feet tall and 112kg, is a former England Students player who also spent time with Old Albanians while undertaking his Masters of Philosophy degree in Polar Studies at Jesus College.

Speaking about the signings, Blues director of rugby Mike Rayer said: “George is an impressive and eager hooker who is destined for big things and we are delighted to welcome him to Goldington Road.

“Last season we started the campaign with just two hookers and injuries meant that we had to bring players in at short notice which wasn’t ideal.

“Having three hookers in place and all battling it out for the starting jersey will only be a good thing for us.

“David will add plenty of strength to the Blues front row and we’ve all been impressed with what we’ve seen from him at both Cambridge University and Old Albanians.

“He is still a young man, but he has a very experienced mind which is backed up with an excellent skillset which will hugely benefit the squad.

“I’m delighted to welcome both players and look forward to working with them, and all of our new signings, in pre-season training when it kicks off this weekend.”
