Bedford Blues rounded off their impressive pre-season with an impressive 27-13 win over Llanelli Scarlets.
Despite going in to the break 13-5 down to the Welsh giants, the Blues put in a very strong performance to come out on top against the pro12 club, with tries coming from Dean Adamson, Mark Flanagan, Paul Tupai and Joel Conlon.
Mike Rayer’s men put in a strong defensive performance which gave the home team very few attacking chances throughout the game.
Bedford started on the back foot, though, after finding themselves 3-0 down following a Steve Shingler penalty early on.
But Blues didn’t take long to respond after Myles Dorrian placed a penalty kick deep in to the opposition’s 22, which gave the forwards an excellent platform to execute their rolling maul which popped the ball up to Conlon who touched down to put the visitors’ first points on the board.
Shingler added another penalty for the hosts which put the Scarlets ahead but both sides were highly focused on not letting their opponents break through their solid defensive lines.
Blues captain for the day Phil Boulton was sent to the sin bin, and Scarlets capitalised as winger Tom Williams charged 40m to score his team’s only try of the day.
But the Blues took the lead early on in the second half with an excellent team try that saw Flanagan cross the line after some brilliant ball handling throughout the attack. Sharp added the extras to make the score 13-12, and it wasn’t long after he chipped over a penalty which gave the Blues the lead.
Bedford then went on to score their third try of the afternoon courtesy of Adamson, with Sharp converting from an awkward angle, and Tupai sealed the victory with a last minute score for the try-hungry visitors.
