The new year began with a bang for Bedford Athletic as six tries heralded a comprehensive 47-7 victory against Bugbrooke.
Victory against the side one place behind them at the start of the day also saw Athletic jump into the top four for the first time this season as they extended their unbeaten run to four matches.
James Mortimer controlled the game with precision kicking and he got the scoreboard ticking with a 10th minute penalty.
This was followed up with a conversion of a Guiseppe Picanza try in the 18th minute, before his second penalty five minutes later helped establish an early stranglehold on the game with a 13-0 lead.
Tommy Mills ensured that the visitors’ dominance was capitalised on with a second try before half-time, again converted by Mortimer.
Ben Johnson got the first try of the second half on 49 minutes which Mortimer converted, and he himself slotted another penalty five minutes later for a 30-0 lead.
Finally, in the 56th minute – following 270 minutes of rugby and having scored 220 points without reply – Athletic conceded as Tom Davies crossed for a try converted by Laurence Baxendale.
This narrowed the gap to 30-7, but the visitors were not to be denied and they upped the tempo of the game to score another three tries before the close.
The bonus point try came on 62 minutes via Andy Ince, converted by Mortimer, before Tom Dolemore added a fifth on 69 minutes and Paul Ryder scored a sixth – also converted by Mortimer.
Ben Beagent also came off the bench to make his 150th appearance for the club.
