Ampthill U16’s won their last ever East Midlands Challenge League match to confirm their status as champions as they romped to a 55-7 victory at Stewart & Lloyds Corby.
A bright and clear morning saw the A’s get off to a good start, with early pressure being applied on the home side and a try coming from a strong run from winger Jack Edwards in only the ninth minute.
The Ampthill forwards dominated the set pieces and further tries came from Soni Ma-Asi and Ben Wilson before half-time, as Ampthill led at the break by 17 points to nil.
Early pressure from S&L in the second half saw their forwards cross the line under the posts for a converted try, despite good efforts from the A’s defence.
However, this served as the wake-up that the Ampthill side needed and sparked them into a second half romp, which started with a great try from Alex Duff as he surged down the right flank with several hand-offs to score in the corner.
The remainder of the game saw Amps score four further tries, courtesy of Liam Everitt, Eugene Ekuban, George Odell and Charlie Fleckney.
At the final whistle Ampthill finished the campaign with a 55 points to 7 victory and the deserved status of league champions.
Amps have a difficult end of season in the much stronger Herts/Middlesex League where wins are needed to maintain their hard earned Division 2 status.
