Ampthill RFC have added former Tongan U20 and North Harbour flanker Matt Howling to their squad for the National One season,
The 23-year-old, who was born in Auckland, played for Tonga in the 2011 U20 World Cup in Italy and for North Harbour while completing his studies at AUT University from where he graduated in August 2014 with a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation degree.
Howling came to the UK in January 2015 and joined Cambridge for whom he made 11 appearances in National Two South, scoring six tries.
Capable of playing across the back row but specialising at openside, he will strengthen Ampthill’s loose forward options for the step up to level 3 rugby.
Mark Lavery, Ampthill’s director of rugby, said: “I am delighted Matt has joined Ampthill. He brings a typically New Zealand style of abrasive and physical back row play as well as an explosive turn of foot and an eye for the try line.
“He will increase our back row options and add to the competition for places.”
