Ampthill U16s’ first Herts/Middlesex game of the season saw them as the visitors to Ealing in North London – an impressive ground and their first game on a 3G pitch.
The early exchanges saw Ampthill applying all the pressure around Ealing’s tryline and an early try was disallowed for a final forward pass.
As often happens. Ealing then went onto score the first try, though Ampthill quickly replied with a try from Liam Everitt after 11 minutes to level the scores tied at 5-5.
Some good rugby followed, with both sides looking strong and at half-time the score was 14-10 in favour of Ealing with Curtis Hymus crossing the line for the A’s.
The second half continued in the same manner as the first, with tries being traded between the sides; Charlie Fleckney and Eugene Ekuban scoring for Ampthill, the last try being a good team effort finished through the backs.
With a final score of Ealing 24 Ampthill 22, the A’s were perhaps left to regret missed kick attempts and the absence of a couple of key players.
The crowd had, however, enjoyed a good game of rugby and Ampthill will be looking to put things right next Sunday with an away fixture at Long Buckby in the East Midlands League.
