Rugby: Bedford Swifts hammered Aylestone Athletic 74-7 in Midlands Four East South at the weekend.

Starting with a strong wind at their backs Swifts pressed and, after their forwards had marched Aylestone back, Spanish centre Pas Medina Falces scored near the posts, with Sam Richbell converting.

Five minutes later Lee Walker went on a solo run before feeding the ball to Phil Cliff to score in the corner, Richbell adding the extras.

Simon Bunday pounced on a loose ball to score Swifts’ third try on 12 minutes and, although the conversion was missed, Swifts secured a bonus point on 25 minutes with the best try of the day through Cliff.

Full-back Ben Wooldridge caught a kick just inside his own half and set off on a run that encompassed side-steps and a massive hand-off before feeding Cliff to barrel over for the try, with Richbell on target with his kick.

Not to be out done the forwards rolled the opposition back with Polish prop Maciej Zygmunt coming up with the ball for his first try for Swifts as they led 31-0 at the break.

With a string wind at their back Aylestone pressed early in the second half but, after Lee Walker had cleared Swifts’ line, Walker went on a solo run to score under the posts with Richbell converting.

Richbell then scored two tries in quick succession, the second one following a darting 30-metre run up the blindside by hooker Gareth Tindall.

Swifts ran in two more tries through Falces and centre partner Bunday before Aylestone notched a consolation try after some sloppy defence by Swifts.

With 10 minutes left Cliff completed his hat-trick, followed by a try from Paul Rowling in the last minute.

Despite not scoring skipper Paul Robson had a storming game in the back row, full-back Wooldridge ran the opposition ragged and Walker dictated the game from fly-half.

Swifts second team, meanwhile, thrashed Biggleswade IIIs 57-0 with Dan Thomas scoring five tries.

Coach Richbell added: “It’s good to see both teams playing committed rugby and playing the way they’ve been practising at training, things are going really well for Swifts both on, and as importantly off the pitch.”

This Saturday they visit Corby.
