Swifts swamp Wellingborough with tries
Rugby: On a swamp of a pitch Bedford Swifts romped to a 41-6 victory at Wellingborough OG in Midlands Four East South at the weekend.
Pressure from OG’s forwards saw them take a 10th-minute lead with a penalty to finally awaken Swifts.
The Bedford side dominated all phases with Simon Bunday scoring an unconverted try in the corner after good play from the back line, with Sam Richbell adding a penalty five minutes later.
Bunday then scored a second try, similar to his first, converted by Richbell as Swifts led 15-3 at the interval.
Paul Cooper scored two tries in quick succession, the first from a wayward kick, before a catch-and-drive move was spread to the backs by scrum-half Martin Blizard who ripped through with Cooper scoring in the corner and Richbell converting.
Swifts were reduced to 14 men when Kenny Vase was sin-binned for retaliation and, despite camping on Bedford’s line, OG’s couldn’t find a way through as the omnipresent Gareth Tindall stole back possession.
Matt Taylor scored the visitors’ fifth try by racing around his opposite wing, Richbell adding the extras, before the forwards won possession just inside their own half and released fly-half Lee Walker who combined with debutant centre Phil Cliff to Ben Woolridge over the line, with Richbell on target with his kick.
Swifts had three sides out on the day for the first time in many years, their seconds losing 17-12- to a strong Northampton BBOBs team and Veterans going down 41-15 to a well-drilled Olney vets side.
This Saturday Swifts entertain Aylestone Athletic and in the third round Midlands of the RFU Junior Vase Swifts have been drawn at Skegness.
