Swifts nil Corby in fine win despite poor performance

Rugby: Despite putting in their worst performance of the season Bedford Swifts still enjoyed a comfortable 31-0 victory at Corby in Midlands Four East South on Saturday.

The soft and wet surface was not conducive to Swifts’ fast running style, but they opened the scoring with an unconverted try on five minutes as Pas Medina Falces bowled his way over in the corner.

A frustrating 25 minutes followed as wave-after-wave of scoring opportunities were wasted before Swifts doubled their lead 10 minutes before the break when Lee Walker danced passed his opposite number and slipped the ball to Ben Wooldridge to score in the corner as Swifts led 10-0 at oranges.

More handling errors thwarted the visitors at the start of the second half before Walker cut through the home side’s defence to score a great solo effort under the post, with Sam Richbell adding the extras.

Corby had their best spell of the game but strong Swifts defence kept the out before Paul Robson swooped on loose ball and fed Walker, who chipped the onrushing Corby defence for Falces to gather and run in the bonus point score under the posts unopposed, with Richbell converting.

With time all but up substitute Pat Murphy then crashed through the Corby defence to score in the corner, with Richbell again on target.

Swifts travel to Skegness in the third round of the Midlands Junior Vase at the weekend.
